Chain guards/covers for bikes with front derailleurs?

I'd like to get a chain guard or cover for my commuter bike, to keep pants and shoelaces away from the chain. It's an older mountain bike with pretty standard 90s XC geometry and 3 chainrings in the front (I'm not losing the large one). The LBS only carries bash guards, and I've searched through these forums and elsewhere and there don't seem to be a lot of practical products out there (no, I don't need a $40 bash guard, even if it does go along side the large chaingear, and I don't want to spend $50 on a piece of sheet metal that may or may not actually fit). I'm looking to spend around $10-20 Canadian. Any more than that and I might as well get some sheet metal and make a guard myself. Speaking of which, DIY ideas are also welcome (but I know about the velcro strap/rubber band already).
