You were in too big of a gear. Put it in an easier gear and try spinning faster. It will alleviate the fatigue in your legs and help you recover faster.

If your legs are tired, don't ride a harder gear. Use an easier one. The purpose of gears is to allow you to continue spinning your legs at an optimal cadence (rpm's) regardless of the terrain. Only change your gears because there has been a change in conditions that has made you spin slower or faster. Change the gears to get back to your optimal cadence.

quickly help fatigued muscles. You were not bonking, no (as others have said).
