Read about WWII, "The good war", and how gas for the civilians was rationed then, and that's when the US was the biggest producer of the stuff.

From what I understand gas rationing during WWII had nothing to do with any shortage of gasoline, since there was still plenty available for civilian use despite the war. Gas was rationed because of the shortage of rubber for tires and the gov't didn't want people wearing out tires. Even bicycle tires were in short supply.

I read an excellent book about this subject called Detroit Goes to War . Highly recommended read!
