If one of my friends would want to ride my all carbon TT bike, I'd tell him the price of it new and then tell him that I need it asap when it's broken ... anybody who agrees to those terms can ride it if I know they are able enough.
I agree with this approach. I have no problem letting somebody I know borrow stuff as long as I know they will replace it/fix it if they break it. I have let friends borrow several of my bikes if they asked. Obviously though, I trusted these guys to take care of them. I agree with what somebody else said earlier that:
friends > inanimate objects
