I've haven't used a kickstand since I was a kid. While touring I almost always find a place to lean, and when I don't, laying the bike down is not a problem for me.

The ONLY NEGATIVE is that a bike laying on the side of the road can disturb a small minority of kindhearted motorists into thinking there's been an accident. I always wave as drivers pass if I see them looking.
