Pontoons aren't needed to protect the cleat. MTB cleats are pretty robust and stand up to scrambling around on rocks etc.. The pontoons are for making walking easier and to protect floors from the cleats. I use mtb SPD cleats on road shoes that accept two-hole cleats.
