Changing crank length

Well I decided upon building up my new bike I am going to experiment with some shorter cranks. When I do one-leg pedalling (my pedal came off the other day and I was forced to) I find that I can hardly bring my leg around the top because the knee and hip angles are so small. So I decided why not try a 2.5mm shorter crank?

I currently use 172.5mm cranks and just ordered some 170mm cranks. Oh, and I'm 5' 10" so yes I'd say it sounds like I am definitely going "against the grain." Most 5' 10" guys I know use 175mm cranks or so.

Any opinions or ideas? What length are you using and how tall are you?
