Broken spindles are not unheard of, but what you are describing is almost a statistical impossibility, unless you bought all five pairs of pedals from a single defective batch, or unless you are doing something drastically wrong with them. I'm guessing it must the former. I can't imagine what one would have to be doing to break 5 non-defective pedals.

Either pedal should serve you find, provided you install them correctly and don't radically abuse them.
