Broken spindles are not unheard of, but what you are describing is almost a statistical impossibility, unless you bought all five pairs of pedals from a single defective batch, or unless you are doing something drastically wrong with them.
Either pedal should serve you find, provided you install them correctly and don't radically abuse them.
Tell me about it, I have my pedals serviced regularly, and I would have expected at least one but more likely two of the failures to be the left side. I'm right foot dominant, but it shouldn't make that much of a difference.
The 1st two sets did have crit cornering scars on the underside, which at the time I thought could have contributed to the failures, but the last 3 were unblemished.
