While the Oregon vehicle code does not say so explicitly, I have seen legal briefs that consider a cyclist to be comparable to a road hazard and it is thus allowable to cross over a double yellow to safely pass, provided there is no oncoming traffic. The folks who give the extra room often donate a smile and a wave to the cause, both of which are reciprocated and appreciated.

I'm still learning to not react to the more hostile ones, like the individual who attempted to put me in the ditch by opening the passenger door as he passed. Had I been riding close to the right edge he would have had me. Because I had left myself an escape to the right I was able to dodge the door.
