It certainly makes sense to have the entire group abide by the same standards, and the kicked out rider may have been guilty of poor manners, but I doubt he actually put anyone in danger. Unless car drivers in your area intentionally run over cyclists when they see one they think is too far in the lane.

Hugging the fog line and being clipped accidently by a driver who thought it safe to squeeze through seems much more likely to me.
