Not if my safety is at issue, it's not. The group's "preferences" could go hang. And I would certainly ride alone in the circumstances described in the OP, because the road pictured is too narrow to safely share the lane and no ride leader is going to tell me otherwise.
BS. Ride how you like alone, but if you ride in a way that a group is not comfortable with, then ride separately from the group.
