What I usually do. I tend to hang in the back at the beginning of our rides and and ride in the middle of the lane, so cars can see me/us. As one comes, I yell "car back" and I move to the right. When the car passes I yell "car around" so everyone knows to hold to the right until the car passes.
So, why is what he was doing less safe than what you do?

People conflate safety (getting run over, for example) with courtesy (or complying with legal requirements).

Note that I'm not criticizing anything you did but your reasons for doing it are a bit confused.
