Instead of being ungrateful, here's what I would do if I were you: Be thankful your parents bought you a brand name, quality bike and ride that bike into the ground. I don't mean abuse it, but simply put so many miles on it that you wear out the drivetrain, etc. When you accomplish that, your parents will see that:
a) you're committed to, and serious about, the sport; and
b) it makes more sense to buy a new bike than replace the drivetrain on your existing bike.
You can then discuss using your $550 to buy a Rockhopper.
I ride my bike around 3 miles a day on my paper route so I guess I am "committed" and I like to ride in the woods trails near me. My parents would never let me buy a rockhopper when they bought me the bike 2 years ago, and my mom say my bike is expensive...
