It's pretty tough if you have a crappy chain tool. After messing with a link, it will be stiff and you'll need to use the "loosening shelf" on your chain tool to free it up. If your chain tool doesn't have one, hold the chain with both of your thumbs on the outer plates of the stiff link and give it a little push.
