I destroyed a set of carbon bars, by not torquing them enough and using a shim. I hit a bump and they rotated; the shim cut into them, through a lot of fiber. Once I figured out what was wrong, I was able to ride them home. It was my own stupidity that killed them, but they didn't asplode! on me.

The used bike I just bought has alloy bars. I'd forgotten just how much they vibrate. I mean, I'm really surprised at that. My carbon bars almost never rattle; they'll shake for a split second after a nasty bit of road, and stop almost immediately. The metal bars are like a tuning fork. But it doesn't actually hurt for them to vibrate.
