I was thinking the same thing. I like mid-level stuff the best. I'm a very good mechanic, so replacing a component is easier for me than for most, and I don't usually mind if I got my money's worth. I usually do get my money's worth, since I know how to treat my stuff. There is no possible way any rider can feel the difference between how one hub or another hub rolls. They may not last the same period, but bad luck happens to all kinds of things and people. I do appreciate high end stuff for what it is. High end stuff usually goes together nicely and effortlessly. High end stuff likes to be adjusted right, and you don't have to tweak carefully and extensively. I hate low end stuff. But the mid-level stuff rides as well as high end stuff, except when you take into account weight. Also, there is no substitute for a good tire. I don't spend top dollar on tires, but I don't fault anyone who does.

In other words, intelligence, perspective, experience, and knowledge can allow you to be more frugal and get a better value than just habitually buying top of the line stuff does. It can even give you better service, if you know how to make things work really well.

I buy my bikes to ride, for the most part, not to show off to others. My self-esteem is not tied into my possessions. Or at least I hope it's not. When I buy nice stuff, I buy it for myself to enjoy, not to attain status among my peers.
