I still think it's a good move if you have the resources to have 1 'great' bike for TTs, racing important events, or showboating on the hammerhead group ride, but also having a 'low-end' bike that's totally crashworthy, lockable in public without big theft risk, and cheap to upgrade parts or experiment on.

I've got a Cervelo racing bike and a Giant Defy3 entry level bike nearly all stock. I ride the Giant way more than the Cervelo outdoors (Cervelo gets some heavy trainer use though) for all the reasons I mentioned above. Have gone down 4 times on the Giant, am willing to ride it for commuting and lock it outdoors all day (nobody wants to strip a Sora part from a frame), and am using it to start learning about basic bike maintenance/repair.
