How do you know the average road is 12' wide? While it is true that most of the ones I ride now are, since resurfacing and widening, some are still 11'. One of the highways got widened to 11' from 10', and one road that I still ride every time I get on the bike has 10' lanes. So from where do you pull the average being 12'?

Closer than recommended by most authoritative material I've read, but that's your call.

And did you take a yardstick to your handlebars before you posted, or are just flying off the cuff? Because I did. I used the handlebars because that is typically the widest part of a bike. One of my bikes is 30" across the 'bars, including the rearview mirror, another is more. I didn't bother measuring any of my bikes that I know are narrower. So now who is the pretender?

Now that I have rendered the rest of that post irrelevant, no further response to it is necessary.
