That is a big jump in the front! ... most compact cranks are 16 teeth. Although I think Sheldon Brown did something similar with an TA-like crank.

Off topic question: Why not go with Capreo (or the Moulton equivalent ... at least I think Moulton has an alternative with a 9 or 10-tooth cog) and a smaller tooth jump in the front? You'd probably get a gear-inch-equivalent double to work that way.
