it does not keep it from going backwards (towards the rear of the bike) but keeps it from going forward (toward the front) the idea of the peice and it's spring is to keep better tension on the RD than the Super Record style did.
so that broken 'lip' rest on the flat part of the little notch on the RD hanger. then when the chain runs through the RD and pulls it forward the spring pulls it backward to make tension.
I am a bit confused and First and Second generation though. according to Velo Base this RD with the upper body bushing and spring is listed as First Gen, and it has the Sheild logo.
My C-rec rd which has a
shield logo does not have the upper body bushing thingie. the one shown on Velo Base without the bushing has a script Campi logo. oddd
