The first thing is to find a brand that fits. For me PI is the only glove that fits my hand all of the way thru the range. I like some padding and a sturdy palm fabric for when i crash.
For me, I have a range of gloves. I need a new summer glove after the last crash, cyclone for cool days, softshell for cold (mine are actually gore), and PI barrier gloves for cold winter days. I am debating Bar Mitts for really cold winter riding this year (likely paired with the softshell gloves).
The key is to be warm and not sweat. Long rides i change gloves as the temp rises.
