At homebrew01 my goals are to be able to sustain higher speeds for longer and generally just become race worthy. I have never raced or even gone on a ride with anyone else besides twice with the local bike shop owner who races trail. I would like to not feel like I suck when I try to enter some races this spring on road.
Some better equipment will not miraculously make you fast. You may see a 1% difference assuming you have a way to measure it.
If you want to race then you need to train properly and start riding with stronger riders to learn what it's all about (fitness, riding elbow-to-elbow, handling, cornering, etc...)
