Easier climbing technique maybe?

I hear this and I put this in practice and I find that it helps, just wondering if any of you do it or would like to try it out.

Instead of climbing a hill straight up, you take it on in a zig zag manner, It's like how long boarders carve ( ride downwards in a zig zag manner ) when coming down to reduce speed.

Not sure how to explain the facts on how this works but i guess it reduces the elevation somehow? and increase distance? but I have no idea what I'm talking about. Just try it and maybe you will see what I mean, or not...
