I'm not dogmatically opposed to MUPs. I ride on one on the west side of town here occassionally. Fortunately most of it is very lightly used, and if you pay attention to other users, and slow appropriately it's not a bad place to ride.

My point is that MUPs have dangers that aren't always recognized, and the dangers of the roads are over stated by people who feel confined to the MUP out of fear.

I'm not saying never ride on a MUP. I am saying its questionable risk balancing to conclude that your only sufficiently safe option is the MUP.

Use some common sense and neither is unreasonably unsafe.
