Any statistical answer will be out of date anyway if based on census information or inaccurate if based on a sample.

I don't have a clue how many households there are in the USA so my guess will have to be a percentage.

People expect way too much from statistics, then are angry and critical when the statistic doesn't live up to their own expectations.

All statistics are estimates of something we can't know for certain. A statistic is based on sampling, and it represents a snapshot in time, not an up-to-the-second actual count of people.

when I post the source of the statistic, you'll be able to look up the confidence level and decide how comfortable you are with that.
