For some reason, the number 20% sticks in my head for number of car free households. I think that the vast majority of those are not car-free by choice, but if you combine the number of low wage workers (think undocumented workers), students, and the middle class in large cities like New York or Boston where cars are not really needed, my guess would be that you would end up at the 9Million mark.
