I'm apparently a bitter @ss too. If the bike parts are nice, I go ahead and assume they did it for looks because they want a huge chainring. Even worse are the people that do 53/22 or some crazy huge cog to compensate. Unless of course you can tell the bike was cobbled together with whatever they had around. In which case two thumbs up! But usually it's someone who thinks big chainrings look cool, and they have no idea what a proper gear is. /bitter @ss.
