Afraid of liking the Lane so much that you'd never settle for anything but "Trek Platinum Steel" again? So much so that you could never ride anything else?

Whatever Platinum steel is. I'm still not convinced it's Hi-Ten.

Mystery tubesets bug me somewhat also, but not quite to the extent they do you, Slim. And Trek is certainly not the only company guilty of that.
