Got the bike back Saturday. There was a small crack in the inside chain guard, which they glued back together, but nothing else apparently wrong. It now has a nice new SRAM PC991 chain, which has so far been beautifully behaved. So maybe the old chain was just worn. Thanks again for all the suggestions!
