I am reading Craigslist ads and looking at pics.

I think Trek 850 and 950 have the best components of the 8xx 9xx, respectively.
I have the Trek files, and can sometimes guess the model, working back from paint.

Non-Trek brands: I do not have a clue; I guess I should download files for them.

I know that components might have been changed on any of these old bikes.
Sometimes ads do not have model numbers, but have a reasonable picture;
so, as an example, would a black rear derailer indicate plastic crap??

I am trying for steel framed bike, if this matters.

Moderator: I just realized that this might belong in the mtb forum or the general forum.
I do not think I can move it, though I could put a posting in mtb forum with just a link to here.
