My Butt Hurts - What do I do?

There is so much information, mis-information, opinion, and advertising on the Internet about Bicycle Seats and Saddles. Much of it contradicting itself. Let's see if we can cut through the chatter and get you back on your bike.

Pain is a subjective and there are many variables, rider weight, saddle size, materials, shapes, saddle positions, rider positions, bike height adjustments, pressures, moisture, clothing, padding, chamois, distance ridden, ride location, previous ride distances, how recent last ride, existing sores, lubricants, any medical issues, your general health, physical conditioning, diet, ..... It can be overwhelming. We'll help you cut through the conflicting opinion and help you decide what's best for you.

STEP 1:

Make sure your bike is adjusted properly to you. You can do this yourself through a number of tutorials, or take it to your local bike shop and have it done for you. They will charge, sometimes $500, so you might want to try doing it yourself first. Either way, you will want to know how it should be set as you may change seats or remove your seat, and need to re-set it.

--"You want your weight carried on your sit bones. Not on soft tissue.
Before buying a seat I would make sure that the seat is in the correct position. This includes not only height, but fore and aft, and less so, angle off of level. You may want to have your bike shop help you get the correct seat adjustment. I fussed with my seat a lot and finally gave up and got a fitting. The fitting resulted in major changes in seat position as well as a new seat."--

STEP 2:

If that doesn't take care of it, then look for a Bicycle Seat or Saddle that fits you well.

So, what saddle do I use?

STEP 3:

Then look at accessories, things like padded shorts, chamois, lubricants and arm rests.

Remember, something that works for one rider, may not work for another, so recommendations for saddles can be problematic. And some people have medical issues that complicate a solution. We will help you find your best solution at the best price possible.

It can be a struggle to get relief, but once you find what works, you will have hours, days and years of enjoyable riding. Don't give up, keep trying, we can help.
