The shot is the DEAD flu virus. They inject it into you so that your immune system will pick it up and build an immunity. You cannot get the flu from the shot. However it does take a few weeks for your body to fully be immune. Also there are many strands of the virus that change every year and the shot won't cover all of them so you still have a chance of getting the flu but it is a lot smaller then if you don't get the shot.
