Breaking a vise isn't that rare, I've done it too. They're mainly cast, so the inexpensive ones can be brittle.
+1.......we've gone through at least 3 or 4 Home Depot Chinese ones
at the bike coop in the last year or two.......and they were pretty substantial.
I used to have a couple of blacksmith's leg vise. Should've kept one......
