I wash the bike every week using these methods:

I have a garden sprayer filled with a 1/3 mix of Simple Green and 2/3 of water. I spray the bike down and then fill my chain cleaner w/SG and clean the chain. I then take a soft brush and bucket of water with a little SG and scrub the bike down. I then hose the bike down and rinse it thouroghly. I use my air compressor to blow out all the water in the nooks and crannies. I then wipe the bike dry with a towel. After all this I spray WD40 onto all the derailures/cassette and area's where water could pool and let it set over night (I do this because WD40 will evaporate and take the water with it). The next day before I ride it lube the chain.

This takes less than 30min and my bikes look like new.

Simple green cleans ANYTHING However, you really shouldn't put WD40 on anything that you actually want to lubricate. As you mentioned, it is a Water Displacer... not a lubricant. It will do little for lube... and ends up only attracting dirt and grime... which is the whole reason you're cleaning it in the first place! hehe
