One last (dumb) question. Apparently I should add grease to the nuts when putting the chainrings back. Will ordinary chain oil ("synthetic lubricant") do or is it too thin? Also my bottom bracket is clicking - again should I add grease, or will oil do the trick?
Get a pot of marine grease / Carlube-type grease. It's about £3 for a pretty big tub and is perfect for greasing threads.

As to a clicking BB, that could well require more than grease as clicking is a sure sign of wear. Replacement BBs aren't expensive though, and even your LBS in London shouldn't charge you too much to fit it, if you don't fancy tackling it yourself.
