At the very least, CM encourages a discussion amongst drivers about cycling rights and awareness. That alone is worth it for me. I'm not a cycling rights militant, and am fully aware that we'll be perenially 2nd class citizens on the road in car-crazy US, but every bit we can do to raise awareness that yes, bicycles are allowed on the road, and not just a handful of weirdos ride them (even if that may be true) is important.
Seeing 1000 riders going through downtown LA is a powerful sight.
I never saw it as being a positive form of awareness, the only thing motorists are going to be aware of are hundreds of people making their commute much more difficult. How on earth would that bring about any positive result? They might make a better impact if they rode obeying traffic laws but that's often not the case so most will see them as cycling idiots breaking the law.
