Front Sus fork upgrade question

Hello,

I am looking into replacing my old MTB rigid forks with new sus forks and i'm wondering if the 1 1/8" or 1 1/2" steerer size is gonna be a problem. Obviously if the head stem frame size is smaller than the 1 1/2"...... But my frame head stem frame size measures 1 3/4"....

My frame is a mid 90's Coyote UltraLite hardtail, with 1 3/4" tubing on the cross, seat and head stem & 2" tubing diagonal to the bottom bracket.

Now without coming across really dumb, is a 1 1/2" steerer size gonna fit? Does anyone know if the is a rough frame thickness to take into account; or Head Set sizing that im gonna have to take into account. Or what ever......

I don't really want to shell out a bundle of notes on new forks only to find they will not fit.

Any advise would be much appreciated.
