I don't consider them even. A Carbolite Peugeot is basically entry level , while the Trek is a nice steel touring bike. Although it is a low end Trek, low end Trek from that era = mid level Peugeot. Trek really did not have an entry level road bike. Touring bikes also sell for a premium over road bikes.
So with the Trek, you get a better frame and a touring bike, for a comparable price. No brainer between these two, assuming it fits. (seat post clamp on Trek is on backwards, no big deal, but irritating.)
The Schwinn Premis and the Centurion Ironman both look like pretty good deals as well, and the Fuji is a special bike (well worth it!)
Myself, I would be getting the Premis, assuming the Fuji is too small. If the Fuji fit, I would be snagging it first.
If you have a lot of hills, then the Trek makes a really good choice.
