Makes sense too.
Right now, the weight difference between a light aluminum frame and a lightest production carbon frame is about a pound. The strength of the carbon frame is compared to the aluminum frame. For me personally, if I could get the benefits of carbon in an aluminum bike (again, performance & ride quality), that'd be an ideal combination.
And I agree. 1 pound is nothing really for the +'s that metal offers in terms of crash survivability and durability.

Well...there was one race held in and around this old lumber equipment museum place. So there was a definite danger of slamming into a rusty outcropping of iron, and I did see a bike with a severely dented top tube afterwards.
I considered the risk worthwhile, it was neat to race around these big metal monsters with tracks higher than a rider.
But even if I did break a carbon bike, chances are I'll be going under 30km/h and fall onto of that aforementioned grass, etc. Of course the chance isn't 100%.
