Wife and I have been riding a custom track tandem on the velodrome in San Diego for almost a year now. We start by dropping downtrack from the rail and stop in the infield warm up circle by unclipping, slowing, getting on top of the pedals, and putting right feet down in unison when we come to a standstill. Turning an 86 inch gear we have attained 30 mph, but blonde stoker is still too nervous to flip the rear wheel around for the 92 inch gear. One of these days when she feels more secure we'll try getting it up to speed. Ironically a blind stoker I talked to recently said he'd have no problem with high speeds. Maybe wife just needs to be blindfolded! Picture on the "Happy Tandem Couples" thread, page 24.

We generally get on the tandem for 25 laps between two sets on single track bikes.

Valley Preferred Cycling Center at Trexlertown, PA is the only track I know of that has tandem racing regularly. It would be great to see another track tandem in San Diego.
