I have only tried eggbeaters and SPD´s but I think the SPD´s are fine for riding round town. You can make them very easy to clip out by buying multi-release cleats and/or adjusting the spring tension right down. Inexpensive and lots of choice with pedals and MTB shoes with recessed cleats. The cleats last OK. What´s popular isn´t always bad.
