Trademarks, like patents, are registered with the federal government in the US, as well as copyrights.
Copyright may or may not be registered with USGOV. Even if official paperwork is not filed with USGOV, as soon as something is published, whether online or in print, it is legally copyright the creator or whoever they grant rights to.
