They are probably the "600 Ultegra" version of Shimano "Look" style pedal:

These use a "Look" style cleat and compatible shoe. If there were a bike co-op near you, I would be shopping for usable shoes- converting existing shoes is possible, but problematical. (What kind of "normal" cycling shoes do you have? Can you take a picture of the sole and post it?)

I agree with Taga- you may be better off removing them and installing inexpensive platform pedals.
