Most of those rapid assay kits are pricey. If they send it out to a lab, all they're checking in-house is that the thermometer strip on the side of the cup is within range, then it gets sent out. Outsource labs will use automated processing equipment to cut costs.
I used to work for a company that manufactured high-throughput screening assays and processing equipment for blood banks. On a per-test basis, like anything bought in bulk, our equipment was way cheaper than a single result in office test.
