I haven't spent any time in Laramie. I have ridden and driven in the general area, and don't have anything nice to say, sorry. The above image sums it up for me.

It's about an hour drive to Ft. Collins which has an active racing and riding scene.

I don't agree w/colorado dale's assesment that BTC route necessarily means it's a good town for cycling. The route passes through there on the way to Hwy 130/Snowy Range, which is one great ride.

There's a stage race out of Laramie - Dead Dog Classic - maybe their web site could lead to some information sources for you.

edit to add: sorry to be negative. but a PhD isn't forever, and it's gotta be better than Lansing MI where I went to grad school.
