I rode a metric century just tooling around the city on a FS bike. Its a little slower than some bikes, but not that much. Helps if you run the rear suspension relatively stiff. Also, don't run knobby tires unless you actually need them. I haven't ridden that bike too much lately, but if it was all I had I would use it for commuting and enjoy the comfort with no problem.
Now you have me thinking -- time to check the tire pressures and have a super plush ride for a change on my 15 mile (each way) commute. I have 6 bikes and they're all different and all good.
Last I timed my commute with smart phone and "My Tracks," the heavy FS bike was about 7% increased time over a CF flat-bar road bike with 28s.
If you value being immune to unexpected potholes and like to jump curbs, don't let anybody talk you out of it! If you want the absolutely fastest time, FS will hold you back a little.
