Right! So this is a cartridge and what I thought was a bearing race isn't. I rubbed away some of the grease and there is a seal behind it . It seems to be fine after all.

The seal behind the bearings isn't the issue. There is definitely a seal or some sort of cover missing from the outside of the bearing, which is the important dside to protect.
