Stumpy.

So, I'm out in San Jose this week for work. Long story short, I'd planned to bring a bike with me and leave it here as I'll be moving out here permanently in a few months, but the night before my flight after packing up my bike, I realized the box was 3" too large to check on the plane. Crap!

So, when I got here Wednesday night I got to looking on the Bay Area CL and came across a Stumpy with a crappy pic and a price of $120. it was in Santa Cruz. I wanted an older rigid MTB because one: the only one I have back in PA is attached to a xtracycle and two: i wanted something for some very light trail riding out west.

So I left work last night to make the 45 minute drive to Santa Cruz. It dawned on me as I was driving there that Santa Cruz is an ocean town. Crap, I wonder if it has rust?

I got there. The lady owner was a hippy straight out of Up In Smoke or some other west coast movie with hippies in it. I mean I'm in Santa Cruz so..

The bike was her fathers. He was the original owner. She told me it was in a garage right now but it had been kept outside.... We were a few blocks from the Pacific.

Well anyway, I got to checking it out. It looked all original. Maybe even the tires? It has surface rust all over, but from what I could tell nothing that a bath wont clean off. The bull moose bars won't ever be pretty again as some of the chrome is missing, but whatever. The best part was that the tires held air, it shifted great, the wheels were true, and it fit me!

She knocked $20 off the price simply because I showed up.

I was able to cram the thing into my rental car, which to my initial dismay turned out to be a Crown Vic. At that moment I was glad I didnt trade it for something else. The bike fit in the back seat without even taking the wheels off (which have no qrs).

So, anyhow, I took the bike to the Performance Bike across the street from my hotel last night, and today I road the rusty mess into work. it's too bad I have no tools with me. It's also too bad I didnt bring a brooks as the seat leaves a bit to be desired.

It' got:

bullmoose bars
suntour friction thumbies
deore xt rear mech
suntour front mech
sugino at triple
conitnental "Country" tires
Concor Supercourse Saddle

serial is M3C12286

maybe I'll get some better pics later.
