I was also advised against my low-cost build. Even the lbs told me it was a waste of time and money but I had a very specific bike in mind and I just wasn't going to find it on a website. You should check out http://www.bikesdirect.com I've seen their bikes on the street and they are really sweet but if you have your mind made up to build it yourself I say go for it. I did and so far I'm glad.
